Roguecraft (Badger Punch Games) £19.99 - £44.99
Game title: Roguecraft
Game description: Roguecraft is a modern day rogue-like game where you take on the role of Zendar the Explorer, an adventurer seeking a fabled artifact within the dark and dangerous dungeons of Mordecoom. Roguecraft offers the choice of three different playable characters - with the Warrior being the easiest to play as he has the most initial health points, with the Rogue having the ability to periodically use teleport spells and the Wizard being the hardest difficulty with the least initial health points but with the ability to fire off magic missiles. The aim of each level is to find a key that will unlock the exit portal, allowing you to move on to the next level. There are 10 levels in total and every play of Roguecraft will provide a unique experience due to the levels being procedurally generated. Potions can be found throughout the game with 3 different types to collect. The green is always a healing potion that restores your health to full. But the nature of the red and blue potions are randomised with each game and you won’t know what they do until you collect them and try them out. Other items that can be collected are treasure chests (for points accumulation) and hearts, that will restore your health bar to full. Roguecraft will run fine on a stock Amiga 1200 otherwise an ECS Amiga with 2MB Chip ram or ECS 1 MB chip + and additional 1mb of other RAM is required.

Summary
Roguecraft is one of the most polished productions to have graced the Amiga in recent times. The in-game graphics look gorgeous with its detailed animations and stylish blend of sombre colour palette that provide the perfect contrast to the splashes of red and yellow. The game music is also suitably dark and atmospheric and compliments the overall organic look and feel to the game very well.
Within its design scope, Roguecraft is very well executed even though I would have liked to have seen some form of story narrative during the game and would have appreciated a bit more of a change to the look of the dungeon levels as you progress deeper into the levels. Irrespective, the game is just so easy to pick up and play and the whole experience feels very engaging and addictive with the ‘one more go’ factor being quite strong when your hero succumbs to the beasts within the evil labyrinth.
The inclusion of procedurally generated levels, along with 3 playable characters – each with their different strengths – goes someway to providing a unique gaming experience with every play through. Throw in some light strategic elements and a good sense of progressive play and what you have here is one of the strongest Amiga releases for 2024. Highly recommended.
