Paw Noir Deluxe (C64)

Paw Noir Deluxe (CAT IN THE DARK) £8.99

Game title: Paw Noir Deluxe

Game description: Paw Noir Deluxe is a side scrolling puzzle platform game graphically represented within a grey-scale colour scheme. Set in a 1930s noir type setting, you play the role of a cat detective who is out to retrieve a client’s yarn ball collection that is stolen by a mischievous gang of mice. The game starts off in a standard fashion and where you navigate through easy hazards and get to the end of the level. But it’s not until the second level where the game starts to show its point of differentiation. You see, our cat has nine lives and you are going to have to sacrifice some of them in order to complete some of the levels. When your character dies, his carcass remains in the game world for you to use after you respawn.

Summary

Despite its promising premise, Paw Noir Deluxe is a one trick pony that will struggle to sustain your interest. I really like the nine lives gimmick of having to die in order to complete levels. But the game’s puzzle element feels uninspired and somewhat clunky and there is very little introduced later in the game to entice you playing.

The game has a somewhat unique aesthetic but even this feels repetitive and the control mechanics just don’t feel polished enough. There is the potential for a good game hidden somewhere here but it hasn’t been fleshed out enough to provide you with an engaging experience.
