Game title: H.E.R.O. Is Back

Game description: H.E.R.O. Is Back is a homage to the classic H.E.R.O. containing 20 new levels that are designed in a more explorative layout. The hardworking miners of Mount Leone have been locked in the cave system through sudden volcanic activities. Your mission is to delve deep into treacherous underground mines to rescue the trapped miners. Each of the new levels presents a series of hazards, including collapsing tunnels, lava pits, and hostile creatures. Strategic use of limited dynamite and precise flying with the backpack are key to navigating the maze-like caverns.

Summary

An improvement to a timeless classic? For me, it’s a resounding yes!

The exploratory layout of the new levels makes H.E.R.O. Is Back feel like a proper arcade adventure and holds my attention even longer than the original.

Aside from the new level design, don’t expect too many changes. The game plays, looks, and feels very much like the original H.E.R.O. In some ways, I do wish LC Games had taken the opportunity to add visual enhancements or some in-game music. Still, it’s the gameplay that matters—and on that front, it delivers.

I always considered the original to be more of a casual experience in terms of difficulty, but that’s certainly not the case here. H.E.R.O. Is Back offers a solid challenge, especially from the fifth level onward. You won’t be finishing all twenty levels in one sitting.

Kudos to LC Games for taking this approach with a classic title. It offers enough differentiation to stand as a worthy game in its own right.

  1. Why isn´t “Dark caverns” on C64 mentioned ?. If lacking variantion is an issue for “Hero is back”, “Dark caverns” is definitively an
option !. For me, I LOVE different editions and remakes from the classic era´s iconic games. Already the Master system in its time had a “Hero” version, with a jetpak instead of the mini heli, and some better sound (not huge changes but yet fun variations). We have seen a descent 3D version of “Pitfall” (can´t remember, but i think it was on PS1). We had an independent interesting remake of “Rush ´ n attack” (digitally) on X360. But the king of the hill is the new “Punch out” on Wii from 2009 !. 22 years after the original, we finally could see “Soda Popinski”, “King hippo” and “Von Kaiser” as modern game characters, now with voices.-AND with their conserved personal features/manners and looks !. No Mike Tyson (or even “Mr. Dream”) this time unfortunately. But what the heck,..we got DONKEY KONG!. Anyway, The potential for making something modern of the “H.E.R.O.” concept is HUGE !. Can´t understand why it hasn´t been done already (?). First person, third person, platform, VR,..you name it !. “The one man hovering rescue service who goes down into the shafts to rescue the trapped workers, and must tackle hot lava walls and nasty huge creatures in the process”, IS EPIC !.
