Summary

Beer Rescue immediately drew me in with its clever use of the C64 palette, producing a bright and vibrant graphical style that’s nicely complemented by in-game SID jingles, delivering that good old nostalgic charm.

The gameplay impresses at first: controls are responsive, and the character moves with a satisfying speed that allows for some tight, fluid maneuvers. However, as I progressed through the levels, it became clear that the game isn’t quite “fully cooked.” I had hoped to see a richer progression of enemies and hazards, but was disappointed to find the initial foe reused across all stages, with only a single additional enemy introduced halfway through.

My biggest gripe, though, lies with the hit detection. Approaching a beer bottle from the top or bottom often fails to register, even when standing directly on it, which quickly becomes frustrating.

Beer Rescue has a solid foundation and the potential to grow into a quality arcade platformer. In its current state, however, a few flaws hold it back and detract from the overall experience.
