Game title: ROGUEish

Game description: ROGUEish is a rogue-like adventure developed where you take on the role of an adventurer exploring a magical tower teeming with monsters, traps, enchanted items, and treasure. Your mission is simple — ascend as many floors as possible before succumbing to the dangers within. Each playthrough is unique thanks to procedurally generated levels and over 130 different enemy types, each with distinct abilities. The action unfolds in a turn-based format, giving players time to think through every move and attack. Before setting out, you’ll choose your preferred fighting style — sword and shield for close-quarters combat or a bow for long-range attacks. Combat strategy is crucial: engaging first gives you the initiative, and every decision, from when to attack to when to use healing potions, can make or break your run. Adding depth to the experience are buffs and debuffs — temporary effects that enhance or weaken attacks and defenses. Between floors, players can visit an in-game shop to spend earned loot on upgraded weapons, armour, or restorative potions. Presented in a clean, Ultima-inspired graphical style, ROGUEish offers crisp visuals, clear combat narration, and a helpful automap to aid exploration.

Summary

ROGUEish successfully delivers that classic rogue-like tension — every step feels deliberate, and every battle carries consequence. Its mix of strategy, exploration, and randomisation captures the essence of the genre while feeling perfectly at home on the Commodore 64.

The game’s turn-based mechanics encourage thoughtful play, and its clean 8-bit presentation evokes a strong nostalgic charm reminiscent of early RPGs like Ultima. The combination of enemy variety, upgrades, and procedural generation makes each play session fresh and rewarding.

However, I did find myself wishing for a little more variety in weapon choices — expanding beyond the sword, shield, and bow combination could have added another layer of tactical depth. Likewise, while the “see how far you can go” premise suits the rogue-like formula, an ultimate end objective to aim for would have given the experience a stronger sense of purpose and closure.

That said, ROGUEish remains a solid title — smartly designed, well executed, and incredibly addictive. The game’s balance, replayability, and polished presentation make it one of the most accomplished rogue-likes ever developed for the C64. It’s a must-play for fans of strategic dungeon crawlers and another shining example of what today’s C64 homebrew scene can deliver.
