Trenchangle (C64)

Trenchangle (DrMortalWombat) Free

Game description: Trenchangle is a tower defense game with a persistent tech tree. Waves of enemy shapes advance towards the player's fortress, and the objective is to defend it by constructing and upgrading towers along their path. Six tower types are available, including arrow, lightning, fire, mortar, blizzard, and laser towers, each built and upgraded using gold earned from defeated enemies. Between levels, players spend a separate meta currency, earned from kills and level completions, on a tech tree that permanently upgrades their capabilities for future attempts. The tech tree cannot be fully maxed out on a single play through, requiring players to reset and reallocate points, or maintain two alternating tree configurations.

Summary

Trenchangle earns reserved praise for fans of tower defense games, though it demands patience before that praise feels justified. Documentation is sparse, and working out how the tech tree, gold, and meta-currency systems interlock takes a considerable amount of trial and error. This is compounded by a design choice that feels clever in principle but poorly signposted in practice: players are expected to fail levels deliberately in early attempts, since defeat still yields the currency needed to unlock permanent tech upgrades. Without external guidance, it is entirely possible to assume a lost level is wasted progress, when in fact it is often the intended route forward. Once this clicks, the loop between failure, tech investment, and eventual success becomes satisfying, but reaching that understanding unaided is a genuine barrier.

The tower defense mechanics themselves are competent without being exceptional. Six tower types offer a reasonable spread of tactical options, and the interplay between gold-funded in-level upgrades and the separate meta-progression tech tree gives the game more depth than a typical genre entry on the C64. It does not, however, do anything to distinguish itself dramatically from tower defense conventions established elsewhere. Presentation follows a similar pattern: the graphics and SID soundtrack do their job adequately, supporting the action without ever standing out as a technical highlight.

Taken as a whole, Trenchangle is a good game hampered by an unclear introduction to its own systems. Genre fans willing to persist through an opaque opening few attempts will find a solid, if unspectacular, tower defense experience underneath. Those less inclined to puzzle out unexplained mechanics may bounce off before they get there.

Pros

Layered progression system: The combination of in-level gold spending and permanent tech tree upgrades gives the game more strategic depth than a straightforward single-currency tower defense title.

Rewarding once understood: The loop of intentional failure feeding long-term tech investment becomes genuinely satisfying once the underlying logic is grasped.

Solid tower variety: Six distinct tower types, spanning arrow, lightning, fire, mortar, blizzard, and laser, provide a reasonable range of tactical choices against incoming waves.

Cons

Poor onboarding: Limited in-game documentation leaves players to work out core systems, including the tech tree and the role of deliberate failure, through extended trial and error.

Unclear failure mechanic: The design intent behind losing levels to accumulate currency is not communicated, risking players mistaking a defeat for wasted effort rather than progress.

Unremarkable presentation: Graphics and music are functional but do little to distinguish the game visually or audibly.
