Star Hero (C64)

Star Hero (SHORIONTEA) $1.50 USD

Game description: Star Hero is a vertical-scrolling shoot ’em up that supports 1 or 2 players simultaneously and offers two difficulty settings: Normal and Easy. Set in a sci-fi universe, the back-story describes an ancient, mysterious creature — once used by a planetary alliance to power its technology — that awakens and seizes control, massacring billions. Only a lone, unplugged spaceship, armed with advanced "Beriosonic" cannons, stands a chance — and the player becomes its pilot, tasked with saving the universe. The game is built using the original (basic) version of the Shoot 'Em Up Construction Kit with no additional engine enhancements.

Summary

For a first-time C64 home-brew from a solo indie dev using standard SEUCK, Star Hero is a commendable effort. The visual presentation — backgrounds, ship and enemy sprites — shows genuine effort and polish, especially considering the limitations inherent in vanilla SEUCK. That said, Star Hero struggles to deliver the classic “pure shoot-’em-up” feel. Standard enemies often require many hits before being destroyed, which dilutes the typical one or two-hit kill structure expected in old-school shooters.  This design decision looks to be a compromise to lengthen gameplay but it fundamentally shifts the gameplay from “shoot and dodge” toward “memorise enemy waves and navigate tight spaces”. As a result, the experience feels unrewarding.
