Game title: Slotshot

Game description: SlotShot is a fast-paced "puzzle-shooter" that takes the familiar DNA of a gallery shooter and infuses it with column-clearing strategy. Set in the year 2084 aboard Deep Space Colony K-7, the game casts you as the station's last line of defense against a rapidly spreading crystalline growth. The gameplay requires you to move a cannon vertically along the left axis, firing "vaccine blocks" into advancing columns. The goal is simple: complete a full column of 10 rows to make it vanish, causing the remaining wall to cascade to the right. To assist in your defense, you are equipped with three tactical bullet types: White (Standard): Fills the first available gap. Yellow (Drill): Pierces through blocks to reach deeper gaps. Blue (Permanent): "Freezes" blocks to prevent them from aging and disappearing.

Summary

SlotShot is a classic “high-score chaser” that attempts to bridge the gap between twitch shooting and thoughtful puzzle solving. While the technical side of the game is impressive—running smoothly despite being built on a custom language—the actual experience is a bit of a mixed bag.

The core mechanics, particularly the cascade mechanic, work remarkably well. Being able to plan a few moves ahead and watch a series of columns collapse is genuinely satisfying. However, the strategy feels a bit thin over long play sessions. While rotating between the three bullet types is necessary, the game would benefit greatly from a wider variety of power-ups or block types to truly extend the tactical depth on offer.

Visually, the game adopts a colorful sci-fi aesthetic, but it leans toward the “basic” side. While the custom multicolor bitmap art is functional, it feels somewhat dull and lacks the extra layer of polish or environmental detail that would help the levels truly “pop” and feel like a high-stakes space colony.

The most significant hurdle, however, is the difficulty curve. The early levels feel sluggish and far too easy, which can lead to boredom for seasoned puzzle fans. Unfortunately, rather than a smooth escalation, the game eventually hits a “brick wall” where the speed ramps up to a ridiculous level almost instantly. This lack of balance makes the progression feel jarring rather than rewarding.

SlotShot is a solid proof-of-concept for the PyCo engine and offers a fun, albeit brief, diversion for those who enjoy arcade puzzlers. With a more refined difficulty ramp and a bit more visual “oomph,” it could have been a top-tier contender. As it stands, it’s a decent addition to the library that just needs a little more calibration.

Pros

Satisfying Cascade Mechanic: Much like the best tile-matching games, the way columns shift and collapse allows for genuinely rewarding strategic planning.

Unique Genre Blend: The hybrid “puzzle-shooter” concept feels fresh on the C64, offering a change of pace from traditional gallery shooters.

Quality Audio: The inclusion of a dedicated SID soundtrack helps elevate the atmosphere and picks up the general “vibe” during gameplay.

Cons

Jarring Difficulty Curve: The progression is poorly balanced; early levels are far too easy to the point of boredom, while later stages ramp up to a “ridiculous” speed without a smooth transition.

Basic Visual Presentation: While colorful, the graphics feel somewhat dull and functional, lacking the environmental detail or “pop” expected from modern C64 homebrew.

Limited Strategic Depth: With only three bullet types, the tactical options feel thin. The game would benefit from more power-ups or block varieties to sustain long-term interest.

Lack of Gameplay Variety: Once you’ve mastered the basic shooting pattern, there isn’t enough new content introduced to keep the experience from feeling repetitive.
