Summary

Hipofruta gets the fundamentals right where it matters most, with the hippo controlling in a precise, responsive way that makes dodging hazards and timing jumps feel fair. Unfortunately, that responsiveness is not matched by much depth in what it is actually responding to. For the majority of the game, enemy hazards move in dull, linear patterns that offer little real challenge, and the platforming settles into something quite basic as a result. The bats prove an exception in a handful of later levels, where their more aggressive behaviour finally demands some genuine reaction and thought, but these moments are the exception rather than the rule. A couple of levels introduce switches that must be reached to open the path forward, and these stand out precisely because there is so little else like them. That variable element, requiring a bit of lateral thinking rather than straightforward avoidance, is exactly what the rest of the game is missing. With so few levels built around ideas beyond dodge-and-jump, the twenty-stage structure ends up feeling mundane well before the credits roll. Visually, Hipofruta does its job without setting itself apart. The jungle environments are colourful and readable, but nothing here pushes the C64’s palette or sprite work into particularly memorable territory. Esteban Trujillo’s soundtrack fares better, providing an unobtrusive, well-fitted accompaniment that suits the game’s tone without demanding attention in its own right. Taken as a whole, Hipofruta is a technically sound but under ambitious platformer. The controls and presentation are solid enough that the game never becomes frustrating, but the lack of variety in its level design means it struggles to hold interest across its full length.

Pros

Responsive controls: The hippo handles with a tightness that makes precise jumps and hazard avoidance feel fair throughout.

Aggressive bat encounters: A handful of later levels ramp up the bats’ behaviour, briefly injecting genuine challenge into otherwise straightforward hazard avoidance.

Well-matched soundtrack: Esteban Trujillo’s music complements the jungle setting nicely without becoming repetitive or intrusive.

Cons

Basic, linear enemy patterns: Most hazards follow dull, predictable movement patterns that rarely demand more than simple avoidance.

Underused variable elements: The switch-and-door levels are a highlight precisely because they are so rare, and the game would benefit from far more of this kind of design.

Mundane overall structure: With so little variety across twenty levels, the game grows repetitive and struggles to sustain interest to the end.
